BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The National Forest Service arrived on the scene of a fire by the Blue Ridge Parkway late Saturday.

A North District Ranger for the Parkway says Bedford Town and County crews tackled the brunt of the fire before national crews got on scene. They believe a downed powerline sparked the fire.

Local firefighters reported about two acres burning when they arrived, but winds caused it to spread to about 11 acres, according to officials.

They add that no structures have been impacted and crews were able to set containment lines. As of Saturday evening, they did not see the fire spreading.

Parks Service Rangers assisted with the initial operation; officials said Shenandoah fire crews were on their way to help national crews.
