Fire at Brandywine Apartment Complex in Roanoke causes $225K in damages

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — The Roanoke Fire-EMS Department says the blaze that raged through the Brandywine Apartment complex on May 3 caused about $225,000 in damages.

On Friday around 11:40 p.m., crews were called to the 2300 block of Winthrop Avenue SW. Upon arrival, firefighters found an apartment building in flames.

Bystanders at the scene told firefighters that two people were still inside. Firefighters searched the building and successfully located and removed both people.

The department said the fire was brought under control within 10 minutes and no one was hurt.

The fire resulted in several residents being displaced due to fire, smoke, and water damage. All residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The investigation determined the fire was caused by an accident and was cooking-related.
