Fire again strikes vacant University Inn & Suites on Tallahassee's Tennessee Street strip

For the second time in less than six months, Tallahassee firefighters had to knock down a blaze in the old University Inn & Suites, a shuttered hotel on the Tennessee Street strip.

The Tallahassee Fire Department, in a Thursday news release, said it was dispatched earlier that morning "to a possible structure fire in the 600 block of West Tennessee Street."

They "found a three-story building with heavy fire coming through a window on the second floor," the release said.

"TFD personnel aggressively attacked and quickly extinguished the fire, confining it primarily to the room of origin. Firefighters searched all three floors of the building and found no occupants inside the structure. The State Fire Marshal's Office was called to the scene for further investigation."

As the Tallahassee Democrat previously reported, firefighters tackled another blaze in the same location last December. The site is slated to host a 10-story student housing tower.

Leon County property records show the location was sold for $2.5 million last March and is now owned by Up Tallahassee Tennessee, a limited liability corporation with a Chicago address.

By Thursday afternoon, an excavator was seen working on the property and the building had been largely torn down. Only the front section of the building remained, where large black scorch marks could be seen.
