Is this (finally) Cornelius Washington’s time to shine?

Since 2013, defensive lineman Cornelius Washington has been a “what if” player for the Chicago Bears. He has boatloads of potential, but has yet to play a full season. In fact, he’s only been active for 16 games in three years. Before the preseason started, many didn’t even think Washington would make the team! Now, in a season which could make or break his entire career, CornWash is stepping up and showing the Bears the player he can become.

As you can probably tell by now, injuries have been a reoccurring issue in Washington’s career thus far. He tore his quadriceps in the first game of the season last year, shelving him for all of 2015. He also injured his ankle and chest in 2014. As a matter of fact, Washington is injured right now, recovering from knee and ankle injuries. Thankfully for him though, that injury isn’t all that serious. Either way, though, these injuries have prevented him from contributing at a high level. If he can stay healthy, however, he may be able to.

During his time at Georgia, in which he played as a 3-4 outside linebacker, Washington was a decent player, but a great athlete. A track star and shotput player in high school, he certainly fit the part as an athletic edge rusher. Although he has since transitioned to defensive end and bulked up to play there for the Bears, his athleticism is still one of his notable traits. Just watch this video of his sack against the Broncos this preseason:

Here’s another video of CornWash shedding off blockers like they’re nothing:

Even with all of the injuries he has suffered, he still has that ability to burst through offensive linemen. On a Bears team with a fairly thin defensive line, CornWash has a great chance to make the team as a reserve. He can definitely be a contributor for this up-and-coming defense. The question is, will he be healthy enough to do so?
