Final Four controversy as top-ranked B-CC forced to hit the road in state semifinals

BETHESDA, Md. (DC News Now) — Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and North Point High School are set to compete against each other in Waldorf Tuesday night as scheduled, in the semifinal of the 4A Girls’ tournament, however, there is some controversy surrounding the game.

B-CC is the top-ranked team. Normally, the number-one team would host until the finals. Instead, the Barons will have to travel to the fifth-seeded Eagles. It’s one of four predetermined sites selected to host the semifinals of the various divisions.

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, MPSSAA, declined a request by Bethesda-Chevy Chase, B-CC, to move the game which will be played on North Point’s home court.

North Point joins Blair (Silver Spring), Wise (Upper Marlboro), and Thomas Johnson (Frederick) High Schools that will host the games. The Eagles are the only team that will play in their own gym.

“It could’ve easily been avoided if somebody in the organizing committee just sat down and said, let’s think, why are we sending the number one seed all the way to Waldorf? Well, there’s three other sites that are closer or in between both schools,” said Rex Garcia-Hidalgo, head of the B-CC Boosters Association.

North Point Director of Athletics Andy Shattuck said he understands the concerns of B-CC parents and boosters, and would feel the same way if it happened to his team. Shattuck added his school is not treating the contest as a home game. Rather it’s simply part of the state tournament, and everyone is welcomed.

Tuesday’s game tips-off at 7 p.m.
