Final design unveiled for GJ Rec Center

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The City of Grand Junction held a final public meeting for the city’s planned recreation center Tuesday. Parks and Rec unveiled the final design during the meeting saying the long-awaited project is now 75% complete.

Parks and Rec updated the original design after winning grants and creating new funding partnerships. The grants and partnerships ensure local taxpayers will not foot the bill for newly planned expansions to the rec center.

Parks and Rec originally promised voters an 83,000 square foot facility in 2022. It’s now been expanded to 107,000 square feet.

Parks and Rec Director Ken Sherbenou told WesternSlopeNow if you attend the attend the June 1 groundbreaking, you’ll find events including a 5K run and a disc golf tournament.

“We’re also going to stake out the footprint of the building and do virtual tours so people can come and snap a QR code and get a virtual tour to really understand what the facility is going to look like.”

Construction is expected to take two years with a grand opening planned for the new rec center by mid-2026.
