Fiery crash along the 15 Freeway in Victorville leaves Barstow man dead

A Barstow man died after a car he was riding as a passenger in slammed into a bridge and burst into flames along the 15 Freeway in Victorville late Friday, authorities said.

The crash was first reported just after 7:50 p.m. amid rainfall on the northbound 15 Freeway at Stoddard Wells Road, according to California Highway Patrol logs. The car went out of control, struck a bridge support pillar, overturned onto its roof, and caught fire.

The 2013 Mazda 3 was headed north when it veered off the right side of the road, across a dirt field and into a dirt embankment, CHP officials said in a written statement.

"The force of the impact cause the Mazda to become airborne and strike the South Stoddard Wells Road overcrossing," according to the statement. "The Mazda came to a rest on its roof near the right shoulder of Interstate 15 and caught fire."

Jesus Millan, 24, of Barstow, died at the scene, according to San Bernardino County coroner's records.

The driver, a 23-year-old Lancaster man, and a second passenger, a 24-year-old Palmdale man, were hospitalized with major injuries, officials said.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation, but intoxicated driving was suspected to have played a role, according to the CHP.

An online fundraiser was established to help his family. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than $2,500 in donations had been received.

Millan's sudden death left family and friends with "shattered hearts," according to a statement accompanying the online memorial. A 4-year-old son survives him.
