Sixteen teams are headed for the boys’ high school basketball state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington next week, and we now know all their names.

Ten regional championships were decided Tuesday night after six champions were crowned on Sunday and Monday.

Those 16 champions fill a winner-take-all, single-elimination bracket to decide the state champion March 20-23.

Four first-round games are set for Wednesday, March 20 followed by another four Thursday, March 21. The quarterfinals are Friday, March 22. The semifinals and championship game will take place Saturday, March 23.

Warren Central High School from Bowling Green won the 2023 state championship and will be back to defend its title after defeating Bowling Green 64-57 to win the 4th Region title.

Other region champions to qualify for the field Tuesday night were: Lyon County (2nd Region), Butler County (3rd), Evangel Christian (6th), Spencer County (8th), Newport (9th), Campbell County (10th), Great Crossing (11th), Pulaski County (12th) and Ashland Blazer (16th). Marshall County (1st Region) and Adair County (5th) earned their berths on Sunday. Louisville Trinity (7th Region), Harlan County (13th), Perry County Central (14th) and Magoffin County (15th) advanced to the Sweet 16 on Monday.

In addition to Warren Central, only four schools from last year’s Sweet 16 are making repeat visits: Lyon County, Newport, Pulaski County and Ashland Blazer.

Fans will also be able to watch several of Kentucky’s top seniors in action this week. Four finalists for the 2024 Kentucky Mr. Basketball award have earned a crack at a state championship in Rupp Arena, including Travis Perry of Lyon County, Kade Unseld of Warren Central, Trent Noah of Harlan County and Aden Barnett of Magoffin County.

The Sweet 16 field also includes Kentucky’s two highest-ranked recruits in the class of 2024 in Lyon County’s Perry and Harlan County’s Noah. Perry, ranked No. 80 nationally in the 247Sports Composite, has signed with Kentucky. Noah, ranked No. 140, is headed to South Carolina. Great Crossing’s Malachi Moreno, who has yet to make his college choice but has a scholarship offer from Kentucky among many other schools, is the 35th-ranked player in the class of 2025. Jayden Johnson of Louisville Trinity is the No. 37 player nationally in the class of 2026.
