Fiance of Scranton shooting victim speaks out

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A Scranton armed robbery in March left one man dead, leaving behind his fiance and children.

26-year-old Jose Tatis Camilo was fatally shot during an armed robbery nearly a month ago.

Allegrucci spoke with his pregnant fiance this evening and she explained to me what she experienced that night and how it’s changed her entire life.

An act of senseless gun violence in North Scranton has forever changed the lives of Charlene Fanning and her family.

“One person could do a lot of damage and destroy a lot of people’s lives, and I just wish he would have thought twice before he fired that gun,” Fanning said.

On March 7, Fanning’s fiance, Tatis Camilo was fatally shot while shopping at a Sunoco Gas Station on North Main Avenue just before 11:00 p.m.

“We were actually supposed to get married the next day, so he got shot on Thursday night and we were supposed to get married the next day. We had a wedding planned down here at the church,” Fanning explained.

The Convenient is less than a minute’s walk from the couples’ home.

When Tatis Camilo didn’t return, fanning knew something was wrong.

“The gas station was surrounded with police, ambulances. I said ‘Did you see my fiance?’ A couple of minutes later they came out and they said that was him. He got shot,” Fanning continued.

Fanning says her fiance was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

He suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head that night, leaving behind Fanning, their 4-year-old daughter, and an unborn son.

“My daughter, she basically knows what happened, but I don’t think she’s old enough to really fully understand. She just says, ‘Daddy’s in heaven,'” Fanning added.

Fanning is now a single mother, and since she is seven months pregnant, she is currently not working. The tragic act of gun violence leaves her not only without her fiance but scrambling for a way to pay for her growing family.

“I just don’t know what I’m gonna do without him. He was the provider of the family and helped pay the bills and I don’t know how I’m gonna live till tomorrow, you know, without him,” said Fanning.

The preliminary hearing for the man accused in the deadly shooting of Tatis Camilo is scheduled for March 3 at 9:30 a.m.
