FHP: Putnam County crash leaves motorcyclist seriously injured, sedan driver arrested for DUI

A collision between a sedan and a motorcycle in Putnam County on Sunday afternoon left a motorcyclist seriously injured and led to the arrest of the sedan’s driver on charges of Driving Under the Influence (DUI).

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), at around 2:16 p.m., the sedan and motorcycle were both traveling westbound on State Road 100, with the sedan following behind the motorcycle. As they approached the intersection with State Road 26, the motorcyclist began to slow down and change lanes, preparing to make a left turn onto westbound State Road 26.

However, the 23-year-old male driver of the sedan from Keystone Heights failed to reduce his speed and lost control of his vehicle.

The sedan collided with the rear of the motorcycle, causing it to overturn multiple times. The impact was so forceful that the 77-year-old male motorcyclist was separated from his vehicle.

Both the motorcycle and its driver came to a final rest west of the collision area. Emergency services were immediately called to the scene, and the motorcyclist was transported in serious condition to UF Health Gainesville for medical treatment. The driver of the sedan did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

A subsequent investigation by the authorities determined that the sedan’s driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. As a result, he was placed under arrest for DUI, which resulted in serious bodily injury to the motorcyclist.

No further information regarding the involvement of any other individuals or factors in the crash was provided. The investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement agencies are working to gather additional evidence and statements related to the incident.

This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the importance of responsible and sober behavior behind the wheel.
