Few showers possible Thursday night, warming into weekend

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — It’s a cold start this morning across much of the state following Wednesday’s cold front. As cooler air moves off to the east throughout the day, afternoon highs will moderate some with mainly 50s and 60s for northern Utah, 60s and 70s in the south; temperatures will remain roughly 5 degrees cooler than seasonal averages for northern Utah. Another weak system is on track to graze northern Utah tonight into early Friday morning, resulting in a chance for a few isolated showers. The best chance for any moisture will be over the higher terrain, however, a stray shower can’t be ruled out along the Wasatch Front. Winds will be breezy for much of the state with calmer weather for Friday afternoon.

By the weekend, our weather roller coaster will really ramp up. On Saturday, a strong southerly flow will take hold over the Beehive State and will push temperatures briefly above seasonal norms. The strong southerly flow will also bring stronger surface winds ahead of a storm system on Sunday. Winds will likely reach advisory levels for the western half of the state on Saturday, be prepared to bring in outdoor items that could become airborne ahead of the wind event.

That southerly flow will precede a storm system that will arrive Sunday into Monday. This storm looks to deliver a decent chance of showers across the state as temperatures ease back down a little below average. Even with another cool down we’ll mainly see valley rain and mountain snow. Active weather may stick around through the bulk of next week, but we’ll continue to fine-tune the forecast and keep you posted.
