Few power outages remain, focus turns to debris after storm in Lena, Freeport

Power has been almost entirely restored to homes and businesses in the Freeport area after a Tuesday night storm resulted in widespread outages affecting more than 93,000 customers in Stephenson County and other parts of northern Illinois.

According to power company ComEd's outage website, roughly 35 outages remain Thursday morning, affecting a little more than 600 people.

According to ComEd, the village of Lena was hardest hit with high winds taking down 26 power lines. As many as 93,000 customers were without power after the storm.

The storm also snapped tree limbs and power lines throughout Freeport.

The City of Freeport posted on Facebook that Freeport firefighters responded to nearly 50 calls of service, 25 of which involved downed power lines and fallen trees blocking several streets. The other calls were for emergency medical services.

As cleanup continues, city officials reminded residents that open burning of yard waste is prohibited and encouraged residents to take storm debris to the wood lot at 2133 S. Walnut Ave. known as Timber Industries, which is open from 8 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Acceptable debris includes small to medium branches, cut up logs, and most other woody debris. Any other materials are not permitted to be dumped at the lot.
