Known more for endless kielbasa, pierogi and kabob, organizers of this year's Hamtramck Labor Day Festival are hoping to step up their food game by offering food trucks and Michigan craft beers.

Volunteer Jared Doyle has had his hands full as of late, trying to confirm food and drink vendors for the annual bash, which takes up all of Joseph Campau between Caniff and Commor, Aug 30-Sept. 1. If he can manage to get it together, this will be the first time the annual bash will feature food trucks, giving visitors much-needed variety. So far though he's only been able to get seven vendors to turn in their applications and deposits.

Add to festival planning, Doyle's regular job as a bartender and cook at Rock City Eatery just got bigger when he and the rest of the RCE crew spent their free time scrubbing and disinfecting Campau Tower to get the burger joint ready to reopen last week.

Konrad Maziarz, a longtime coordinator of the festival, assures Eater Detroit that issues with vendors inevitably happen every year. "We almost have to wait until the last minute because people don't want to part with their money."

So what to expect in the way of food? Doyle says he's been in talks with a woman in Ohio who runs a food truck court, that offers up tacos, Mediterranean, Asian and healthy fruits and salads. Maziarz has been in charge of booze. He says he's trying to get Motor City Brewery, Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. from Warren and Saugatuck Brewing Company, among others on board.-By Serena Maria Daniels
