On the ground in Ferguson as police and protesters clash

For the fourth straight night, the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, erupted Wednesday as heavily armed police officers fired tear gas, smoke bombs and rubber bullets at demonstrators protesting the death of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager who was shot and killed by police last weekend.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson did not immediately return an email requesting comment.

But photos and videos posted to social media by journalists and others overnight made the St. Louis suburb look more like the Middle East than the Midwest.


While there were several disturbing reports of police harassment of journalists — including the arrest and alleged assault of reporters from the Washington Post and Huffington Post — other members of the community seem to be welcoming the media with open arms.


David Carson, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch photographer who captured several of the dramatic images above, tweeted that he was welcomed into a home.
