Female Celebrities Supporting the Women’s March on Washington
On Jan. 21, one day after Donald Trump takes office as president, more than 200,000 people are expected to participate in the Women’s March on Washington. Protest rallies are also planned across at least 30 cities nationwide, from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C.
The purpose of the march is to send a bold message to the new administration and the world that women’s rights are human rights. Feminist icon Gloria Steinem and performer-activist Harry Belafonte are serving as honorary co-chairs of the march.
Organizers are quick to point out that the Women’s March on Washington is not an anti-Trump protest. “We’re not targeting Trump specifically. It’s much more about being proactive about women’s rights,” said Cassady Fendlay, spokeswoman for the march.
The event began as a Facebook page calling for women to show up in D.C. to protest Trump’s inauguration, but it quickly evolved into a mass movement.
The march’s organizers say it will allow people to “stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families” while “recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.”
