FEMA extends aid deadline for NJ storm victims
FEMA extending deadline until March 1 for New Jersey superstorm victims to apply for help
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- New Jersey residents still suffering from the effects of Superstorm Sandy are getting more time to apply for disaster aid.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency says it's extending the deadline for people to apply for disaster relief funds until March 1.
It was originally set to expire at the end of this month.
Those affected by the storm must first register with FEMA. The agency then helps determine what aid programs or referrals to other agencies a person may qualify for.
FEMA funds can only cover things not reimbursed by insurance. FEMA funds can cover rental assistance, critical home repairs and other disaster-related needs for those who qualify.
More than 57,000 New Jerseyans have applied for FEMA aid so far.
