‘I feel cheated’: Mother devastated after losing son on Mother’s Day

NEW IBERIA, La. (KLFY)– Veronica Branch, the mother of 21-year-old Daiquan Branch, said since she lost her son, she feels like she’s in a nightmare. Branch said when she got the news about Daiquan being shot, she could not believe it.

“I feel cheated,” Veronica Branch said. “Not for myself or for my son and my granddaughter.”

The 21-year-old was killed in a shooting in New Iberia Sunday evening.

“No one gave services to my son,” she said. “He was still alive. I’m not saying he was not going to die. But out of human dignity and respect, somebody could have tried.”

Because of this, she’s angry. She said her son was killed in front of his family, and as not given help while dying.

Branch said she knows her son was not perfect, but it does not change the message she wants everyone to hear. That message is the senseless killing needs to stop.

“That’s why I posted the video. The picture that I did polls with him covered up because I wanted people to understand and see the reality of death, street death. And the message for me, for all the young children, it doesn’t matter about black and white, but I’m speaking to my minds. The streets do not love our children,” she said.
