Feds sue NY fish company

Feds allege unsanitary conditions at New York fish company

NEW YORK (AP) -- The federal government says a New York City company has been processing fish under unsanitary conditions.

The accusation was made in a lawsuit filed on Friday against N.Y. Fish Inc.

The suit alleges that the makers of smoked salmon and mackerel failed to take steps to minimize contamination by potentially life-threatening bacteria.

It says a February inspection of a Brooklyn plant found that fish wasn't being cooked long enough and that a brining solution wasn't salty enough.

Prosecutors are seeking a court order that would force N.Y. Fish to stop distributing its products.

A woman who answered the phone at the company on Friday declined comment.
