Feds still reviewing NC nuke plant's year-old flaw
Feds continue inspecting year-old details that forced Duke Energy NC nuke plant to close
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A Duke Energy Corp. nuclear plant in Wake County remains idle two weeks after operators shut it down after finding a year-old problem and a week after federal regulators launched a special inspection.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Roger Hannah says the team of specialists and the on-site NRC inspectors were still at work on the problem Wednesday. They're trying to find out the details of the late discovery of corrosion and cracking in the reactor vessel's covering at the Shearon Harris plant near Raleigh.
Findings won't be announced until at least late June.
Duke Energy and regulators said the problem was in the covering of the reactor vessel, which contains heat produced by the nuclear core's energy.
The company and regulators say there was no evidence of radiation leakage.
