Feds: Man sentenced after Benton Harbor ‘shootout’

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A second man has been sentenced to prison after an apartment complex “shootout” in July, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan says.

Terrence Turner, 29, of Benton Harbor, was sentenced to 13 years and nine months in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm, the office announced Wednesday in a release. A three-year period of federal supervised release was also imposed.

Turner pleaded guilty in January, according to the release.

The attorney’s office says the shootout, which involved multiple shooters, happened July 9, 2023, in a parking lot at the River Terrace Apartments in Benton Harbor. According to the office, one apartment — which had a child inside — was hit five times during the shootout.

“Mr. Turner’s careless acts of violence put innocent lives at risk and today’s sentence reflects the seriousness of his crime,” said U.S. Attorney Mark Totten in a statement.

Another shooter, Shamonte Buchanan, was sentenced in April to five years and 11 months in prison.
