FBI honors Menominee Tribal Victims program

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – Those who help seek justice for crime victims on the Menominee Indian Reservation are being honored this week by the FBI. Every year the FBI’s Milwaukee Field Office picks an organization to honor for its efforts in preventing federal crimes and enhancing law enforcement efforts in the community. The award is called the Director’s Community Leadership Award.

This year it went to the Menominee Tribal Crime Victims Program. Those who work within the department help victims navigate the criminal justice system from start to finish and advocate for them. It includes helping victims with impact statements for court, getting housing, filing restraining orders and getting restitution.

When it comes to Major Crimes, they work in tandem with the FBI, addressing unique challenges faced by tribal members. Lacey Zarda, with the Menominee Tribal Crime Victims Program, explains, “One of our biggest passions is trying to get victims’ voices and just so that they know that they do have support because the criminal justice system is very intimidating, especially when you know something that happened to you that’s very traumatic.”

The Crime Victims Department has already received its award locally. The department will receive the national award tomorrow (4/19/24) at the FBI Headquarters in the nation’s capital.
