Fayette County man sentenced for multiple felonies including attempted Second-Degree Murder

SCARBRO, WV (WVNS) — A Mount Hope man was sentenced to prison for multiple felonies, including attempted Second-Degree Murder.

43-year-old Eddie D. “Gutter” Morgan, of Mount Hope, was sentenced on May 9, 2024 for multiple felony convictions that included: one to three years for the felony crime of attempted Second-Degree Murder; two to ten years for the felony crime of malicious assault; five years for the felony crime of wanton endangerment; and ten years for the felony crime of use or presentment of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Morgan’s sentences will be served consecutively, and he pleaded guilty to the various offenses on March 28, 2024. He will need to spend at least six years and nine months in prison before being eligible for parole.

Members of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting in the Scarbro area of Fayette County on November 18, 2022, and the victim was interviewed in the emergency room of Raleigh General Hospital by a member of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department Detective Bureau.

The victim stated that Morgan got to the house earlier that evening, and that a verbal argument occurred between Morgan and the people in the house, one of which was the victim.

Morgan was to leave after he threatened to shoot up the house as a part of the arguments, and once he left, the victim reportedly went outside after Morgan. Morgan pulled out a gun once outside of the house, which he fired twice. One of the shots hit the victim above the elbow on his right arm.

When the crime scene was being processed, two spent cartridge cases for a .380 caliber handgun were found.

Morgan was arrested at a traffic stop on November 30, 2022, where a .380 caliber handgun was found in his possession. Laboratory examinations revealed that the two spent .380 caliber cartridge cases that were found at the scene were shot from the .380 handgun that was in Morgan’s possession when he was arrested.
