GENOA TWP. — Owners of a golf club near Lake Chemung are gearing up to rebuild a clubhouse destroyed in a 2022 blaze.

Faulkwood Shores Golf Club caught fire in the early morning hours of July 1, 2022. While the course on Hughes Road was able to reopen shortly after, the clubhouse was razed in August 2023. The business has been working out of a temporary trailer and cart barn.

The clubhouse was originally a farmhouse, dating back to the late 1800s or early 1900s. It was converted to a clubhouse when the course opened in 1969 with nine holes. The back nine were added two years later. Singh Development purchased the course in 2017.

Singh plans to construct a 4,575-square-foot clubhouse on the west side of S. Hughes Road, approximately where the old one was located.

Sarwan Grewal of Singh Development told The Daily they're hoping to break ground in April or May and have the clubhouse open by the start of next year's golf season.

"The biggest thing is the loss of revenue on liquor sales," Grewal said. "And we're not allowed to do any (meals) because we don't have washing facilities."

While the business has been able to sell beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks, they've lost revenue, Grewal said.

The new clubhouse will be similar to the first floor of the clubhouse at the Links of Novi, another business owned by Singh Development. The floor plan shows a kitchen, dining room, bar, pro shop, and restrooms.

"It will be better equipped to host outings," he said.

The golf course opened for the season earlier this month. Meanwhile, the Genoa Township Board of Trustees approved an environmental impact assessment Monday, March 4 — a necessity to begin rebuilding.

Officials also plan to expand parking and improve a golf cart crossing across Hughes Road to the back nine.

Brighton Fire Marshal Rick Boisvert told The Daily Thursday the fire was determined to be "accidental" and originated from a basket of oily rags.
