Father urges for justice for son killed during Dumas mass shooting two years ago

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – On Mar. 19, 2022, a mass shooting took place during a car show in Dumas that left 27 people injured and one person dead.

The victim who died was 23-year-old Cameron Shaffer. His father Fredrick Shaffer sat down with KARK 4 News for his first on-camera interview to share his love for his son and the pursuit for justice in this case.

“This the first time I talked about him. I don’t open up a lot but I needed to talk to someone and I needed answers,” Shaffer said.

Shaffer said his son was with his friends at The Hood-Nic car show in Dumas along with thousands of others in attendance when everything turned to mayhem.

“My nephew and them called and said they couldn’t find him and then the next thing I heard is he got shot,” Shaffer said. “Why did my son have to die?”

Arkansas State Police are still investigating the case and so far they have made one arrest but it wasn’t for the death of Shaffer’s son.

“I just want justice. I don’t want anyone else to get hurt but I want people to pay for what they did,” Shaffer said.

As the years go by with still limited answers, Shaffer said he wants more to be done by law enforcement with the case.

“It’s really frustrating and makes you feel like people are not doing their job,” he said.

Shaffer said the agony of losing his oldest of three kids is felt by everyone, including his youngest son who is only 9 years old.

He said his pain has been unimaginable, wishing he could tell his son how much he loves him one more time.

“He is truly missed,” said Shaffer.

Shaffer said no one has the right to take a life.

“Stop the violence. It’s ridiculous you can’t go anywhere, people have no regard for life right now,” he said.
