Ukrainian authorities have arrested a father and son, both active servicemen, in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer in Vinnytsia Oblast, the National Police Chief Ivan Vyhivskyi reported on Facebook on April 21.

This was also confirmed by the Prosecutor General's Office.

"Thanks to the coordinated work of the operational services, the whereabouts of the suspects were established – they were hiding in Odesa Oblast,” said Vyhivskyi.

“The criminals were detained with the force support of the KORD special forces. The attackers are two military men, father and son, 52 and 26 years old, natives of Vinnytsia Oblast. The policeman, who died in the line of duty while protecting his partner, who was attacked first, managed to make shots and wound the attacker. The circumstances of the incident and the motives for the crime are being established."

The incident occurred during a routine vehicle stop in the early hours of April 20 in the Haisyn district, when the suspects reportedly opened fire on the officers. A 20-year-old officer was killed, and his partner was injured in the attack.

Criminal proceedings under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine have been initiated, which could lead to a life sentence for "Murder or attempted murder of a law enforcement officer in connection with the performance of his or her official duties."

Police officers stopped a car with two men in it for inspection around 2 a.m. on April 20, in the Haisyn district of Vinnytsia Oblast. The attackers opened fire on the police. A 20-year-old law enforcement officer was killed and his partner was injured.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that the suspects were formerly part of the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade and are currently serving in another military unit. Authorities also recovered the vehicle used in the attack and military-grade ammunition in Vinnytsia Oblast.
