Fatal shooting at Indrio Savannahs Preserve; SLC Sheriff's Office investigating

ST. LUCIE COUNTY – St. Lucie County sheriff’s officials are investigating a Thursday shooting in the northern part of the county that left a 47-year-old man dead, the agency stated Friday on social media.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as James Alan Behncke, of Indian River County.

Investigators about 6 p.m. Thursday went to Indrio Savannahs Preserve in the 5200 block of Tozour Road regarding a shooting. The preserve is 297 acres on the west side of U.S. 1 north of Indrio Road.

“As detective(s) continue to collect evidence, our preliminary investigation has revealed that this is domestic in nature,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “The events leading up to this shooting are under investigation.”

Friday afternoon, sheriff's crime scene detectives were in the preserve.

The agency did not state whether any arrests were made, but said “all parties” were accounted for and there is no threat to the public.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Tonya Woodworth did not immediately return a call Friday asking for information. She has not responded to numerous phone calls and messages in recent months on a variety of issues.
