Fatal crash on South Quaker Lane: High school student killed, three others injured

A Franklin D. Roosevelt High School student died Wednesday in a one-car crash on South Quaker Lane in Hyde Park. Three other students were injured in the crash.

Shortly before noon, Town of Hyde Park Police responded to South Quaker Lane near Honeywell Lane, where a southbound vehicle had struck a utility pole.

All four occupants in the vehicle, whose names have not been released, were transported to local hospitals, where the driver was pronounced dead. The front passenger sustained life-threatening injuries and the two rear passengers sustained non life-threatening injuries.

The students were likely on their way to afternoon classes for the Dutchess BOCES CIT program at the time of the crash.

Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, whose crash investigation unit also responded to the scene, said Wednesday the primary factor in the crash appeared to be unsafe speed. The investigation is ongoing.

Hyde Park Superintendent Dr. Pedro Roman and Dutchess BOCES Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jodi DeLucia said the schools are cooperating fully with police.

Additional counselors will be available at FDR and CTI Thursday and Friday to provide support to students.

Roman and DeLucia said their thoughts and prayers are with the students and their families.
