Fatal crash closes lanes of northbound I-15

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car on northbound Interstate 15 Wednesday afternoon, prompting closures to multiple lanes that halted traffic through the area.

The collision was reported just after 1:45 p.m. near San Diego’s Tierrasanta neighborhood between the exits at Friars Road and Aero Drive, according to California Highway Patrol. Upon arrival to the scene, authorities found the pedestrian within traffic lanes.

Based on preliminary investigation, authorities determined the pedestrian, identified as a 28-year-old man from San Diego, was walking in the traffic lanes north of Friars Road when he was struck by a Honda Element.

The pedestrian sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead on scene, CHP said. His identity is being withheld by authorities pending family notification.

No other injuries were reported in the crash. The driver of the Honda, identified as a 33-year-old man from Chula Vista, remained on scene and cooperated with authorities.

A hard closure was put in place to the left three lanes of I-15 through the area for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene. A SigAlert was issued for major delays through the area, given a traffic back up ahead of the evening commute that appeared to stretch about five miles.

By 5:45 p.m., all lanes had been reopened to traffic, Caltrans said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The incident remains under investigation by authorities. According to CHP, a toxicology report is currently pending to determine whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
