Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say two people are dead following a serious collision between a transport truck and a car Tuesday afternoon that closed the westbound lanes of Highway 417 near Limoges, Ont., for several hours.

In a statement issued Wednesday morning, OPP said emergency crews were called to the westbound lanes of the highway just before 3 p.m. where they found both vehicles engulfed in flames.

OPPS said bystanders tried to rescue two people from the car but couldn't reach them because of the intense flames and smoke.

Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer wasn't hurt, police said.

Limoges is a town in the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, about 45 kilometres southeast of downtown Ottawa.

OPP are still working to identify the two victims and are asking anyone who may have dashcam footage of the crash to contact the Russell County detachment at 1-888-31-11-22, and refer to incident E240532150.
