Our mothers can be our greatest cheerleaders as well as our greatest critics — kind of like those shaping today’s fashion industry, which encourages everyone to express themselves and to be fearless. But the moment you make a misstep, out come the rolls! In honor of the similarities, Yahoo Style asked eight fashion insiders what their greatest style advice was from their mothers, and how they intend to celebrate their moms on Mother’s Day.
Best style advice from mom:
In order to look good, at times, a woman will suffer for fashion. I’m reminded of that when it is a long day of shows and I’m wearing major high heels.

My mom has always taught me to really own my style. Having great style is not about always having the high-end designer labels. It is about how you mix and match the high and the low. What matters most is how you put it together, and [that you] feel confident doing so.
Mother’s Day plans:
Being that my parents live [far away], I won’t be able to physically spend the day with her, so we plan on celebrating it early when I fly out end of April. Brunch, a sweet card, and time well spent together is all that she ever wants!
Best style advice from mom:
My mother has never been afraid of a pop of color, and while I’m a bit more conservative than she is, color-wise, I’ve learned to appreciate and incorporate a bit of brightness into my typical black/gray/white/denim uniform.
Mother’s Day plans:
Unlike me, my mother rarely invests in designer pieces, so I always look at holidays like Mother’s Day, her birthday, and Christmas as an excuse to buy her something she wouldn’t buy herself…like the Proenza Schouler curl clutch in coral and watermelon. She loves Karen Walker sunglasses too, so I’m also considering a pair of her new Babou Sunglasses!

Develop your own personal style; don’t follow trends.
Mother’s Day gift wish:
I’d love to receive a massage this year. I rarely treat myself! I would also love to receive this Parker Thatch tennis bag. My daughter gets so many compliments when she wears hers and it is just so much better looking than the athletic brand versions. I love the natural canvas, navy edging, and green printed rackets.

You can never be too overdressed.
Mother’s Day gift you’ll give:
This year, I’m planning a surprise trip for my mother to Napa. It will be so lovely to have that relaxing time to be a family. I hope it will be special and something we will always remember.

Mother’s Day gift for mom:
Casablanca lilies are her favorite. I’ll have a big bouquet delivered, which will make her house smell amazing for the whole week. Plus she asked me to set up a Facebook account for her business, so I’ll do that, too.

Be your own person, never copy someone else’s style, and always look put together from head to toe, no matter where you are going). That includes hair and makeup. (Seriously, even if I am running to the corner store she says you never know who you will run into.)
Mother’s Day gift for mom:
Earrings from John Hardy and a canvas of this photo of the two of us from the campaign to celebrate, and act as a reminder of this moment. My mom is my biggest supporter and always is trying to figure out what it is exactly that I do, so having her on set with me this day was such an eye opening experience for her. It obviously meant so much to me. (Not to mention the final product came out BEYOND WORDS!)

My mother once told me that it’s better to be underdressed than overdressed — and that has always worked for me, since I’m all about comfort!
Mother’s Day gift for mom:
I’ll be giving her the MAMA ring, of course! She’s got to be one of the first mothers rocking it, but shhh, don’t tell her. :
