French fashion designers are in the spotlight for the coming weeks, with both Jean Paul Gaultier and Yves Saint Laurent the subjects of retrospectives at museums in the US. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier

San Francisco, USA

The De Young Museum in San Francisco, California is honoring Jean Paul Gaultier with a retrospective devoted to his creations spanning from his 1976 ready-to-wear to his 2007 haute couture collections. Entitled From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk it celebrates his avant-garde style and collaborations with Madonna, Lady Gaga, filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, dance and theater with films clips of concerts, ballets, and fashion shows. The expo follows from the recent launch of the Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs exhibition in Paris and comes just ahead of the unveiling of an Yves Saint Laurent retrospective in Colorado.

China Fashion Week

First launched in 1997, China Fashion Week showcases innovative looks from local designers including Chu Yan, Qi Gang and Toray Liu Wei as well as foreign creators. Mercedes-Benz became a sponsor in 2011, raising the event's status on an international scale. Also taking place during Fashion Week will be the China International Clothing & Accesories Fair (CHIC), welcoming a number of European and US brands as well as Chinese ones.

Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective

March 25-July 8
Colorado, USA

The internationally acclaimed exhibition Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective hits the US March 25, with Denver Art Museum hosting the exhibition, displaying work ranging from the creator's earlier days at Christian Dior to his final catwalk collection in 2002. Some 200 haute couture outfits will be on display along with photographs, drawings and films. 2012 will be a big year for fashion exhibitions, with the Jean Paul Gaultier expo in California, a Christian Louboutin retrospective due to take place at London's Design Museum later in the year and a Louis Vuitton Marc Jacobs exhibition running in Paris till September 16.

Cartier, Jeweler of the Arts

Four artworks commissioned by French luxury jewelry house Cartier will be showcased together in Paris for the first time since their various appearances at events including Art Basel and Art Basel Miami. Made using precious and semi-precious stones no longer deemed suitable for Cartier jewelry, the pieces were made by Japanese filmmaker Takeshi Kitano, American filmmaker David Lynch, Italian architect Alessandro Mendini, and Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. Prior to the expo, Milhazes's ‘Aquarium' piece will also be presented at Art Dubai in March 2012. Reservation with the Visitor's Department is necessary.
