Addicted to Scrabble-like mobile app "Words With Friends"? You may get even more hooked when you play it on another addictive platform, Facebook.
Zynga, the social gaming producer, has announced an upcoming version of "Words With Friends" for Facebook. This marks the first time Zynga, maker of the ever-popular (or annoying, depending on how you look at it) "FarmVille" franchise, is bringing a mobile game to the social networking site.
The upcoming Facebook version of the game will let players challenge any of their Facebook friends to a war of words. Players will also be able to sync previous games played through their iOS or Android apps to the Facebook version. In the past, iOS and Android users could not play with one another.
Another unique feature in the Facebook version is the ability to smack talk on a friend's Facebook wall when you're playing the game. Want to be notified of the launch? Zynga recommends people log onto their Facebook mobile version so that when the game launches, existing "Words With Friends" games will carry over automatically. Furthermore, "liking" its Facebook page will send you a notification when the game launches.
Zynga, known for its acquisition-based growth strategy, snapped up the creators of "Words With Friends," Newtoy, last December.
In early July Zynga filed for an IPO with the aim of raising at least $1 billion. Two weeks later it filed an addendum to its S-1 filing that highlighted its co-dependent relationship with Facebook. For instance, the filing disclosed a 2010 agreement for Zynga to exclusively use Facebook credits for five years. Furthermore, Zynga is not allowed to release new games on an undisclosed list of social networks, which presumably doesn't include Pengyou.
Zynga also broke into mainland China last month through a joint venture with Sina.com, a local online gaming portal.
