‘Fantastic Beasts’ Tops Foreign Box Office With $60.4 Million

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” topped the foreign box office this weekend, grossing a hefty $60.4 million.

The Harry Potter spinoff is on approximately 23,000 screens in 67 markets. Its worldwide total stands at a sizable $607.9 million. Warner Bros., the studio behind the fantasy adventure, hopes “Fantastic Beasts” will kick off a new franchise. It plans to make four sequels.

“Fantastic Beasts” did particularly well in China, grossing $15.5 million, and pushing its total in the Middle Kingdom to $72.5 million after two weeks. It also got a boost from Japan, where it made $6 million.

In second place, “Your Name,” an animated offering from Japan, picked up $40.9 million thanks largely to a monster opening in China. The fantasy film topped charts in the country. It has made $243.1 million worldwide. “Your Name” follows two teenagers who swap bodies.

Disney’s “Moana” snagged third place, adding $32 million to its $177.4 million global haul. The animated film about a girl from the Pacific Islands who journeys across the ocean to lift a curse is in 30 territories, with several key European markets set to open in the coming weeks. “Moana” has already debuted in China, making $21.3 million in two weeks.

“Underworld: Blood Wars” and “Allied,” a spy thriller with Brad Pitt, rounded out the top five, making $16.3 million and $12.1 million, respectively. “Allied” has earned $53.7 million globally, which is a disappointment given its $85 million budget and Pitt’s star power.
