New Fantastic Beasts image supports a HUGE fan theory
The Harry Potter fan universe exploded today with the release of the first official cast shot – and confirmation of the title – of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald. Exciting times.
There's plenty to be learned from today's juicy info-burst, of course, but one particular thing stood out to us, and it has potentially huge implications for the Potter fictional world.
Let's start with Claudia Kim.
According to the press release, she plays "a Maledictus, the carrier of a blood curse that destines her ultimately to transform into a beast".
Previously it was revealed that she plays one of the acts in the Circus Arcanus, a travelling "museum of human oddities" who appeared in a poster on a wall in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them.
So which of the circus acts is Ms Kim playing? Look closely at the billed performers: Borys the Brute, perfidious hypnotist? Nope. Homo Amphibia? Nope. The two-headed baby? Unlikely.
How about the Enchanting Snake Girl?
BINGO.
Look again at Kim's costume in the image released today: it's clearly inspired by snakeskin: all dark, sleek and shiny, with an unmistakable motif of scales.
So it's safe to guess that she is the Snake Girl.
And as we know, she's a Maledictus – she carries "a blood curse that destines her ultimately to transform into a beast". It would be pretty weird if that beast turned out to be anything other than a snake. She's not going to be an otter, is she?
Which leads us to the next question: do we know any significant snakes in the Harry Potter universe?
We know Nagini.
Conveniently, we know very little about Voldemort's pet (and horcrux) before the events of Harry Potter and the Goblet Of Fire. We know that the wraith-form of Voldemort inhabited snakes' bodies in Albania after failing to kill the infant Harry, and we've always assumed that Nagini was one of those snakes – or at least that his relationship with her began at that time.
Considering that the Maledictus Snake Girl will almost certainly encounter the dark wizard Grindelwald for better or worse in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, it's at least possible that she will end up permanently in snake form and either be introduced to Tom Riddle or else simply go on to discover an affinity with him at a later date.
Nothing we know about Snake Girl, Grindelwald, Voldemort or Nagini precludes the possibility that this theory is right.
Which is not to say it's not a load of old snakeballs, of course.
