Fans excited about upcoming renovations to Capital One Arena

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Fans of the Wizards are celebrating after the DC Council passed an emergency bill approving $515 million to renovate Capital One Arena.

Many fans ahead of the Wizards game Tuesday night told DC News Now the investment from the District to help Monumental Sports and Entertainment is worth it and exciting.

“We are excited about it. We’re happy that this both teams, the Capitals and Wizards are staying here in the nation’s capital,” said Kenneth Jordan.

“I’m very excited about it,” said Ryan Wimbush.

“I’m excited that the team is playing in the city where they belong,” said Juan Arias.

Monumental said the $515 million will help develop better sightlines, premium hospitality options, better digital infrastructure and more.

But there are some reservations from fans.

“They saying it’s coming out a different budget. But I don’t know, is it going to affect taxes? You know, because somehow they got to get the money,” said Wimbush.

But overall, Wimbush said it’s good for the District.

“It’s a good investment because this area is prospering right now you know, and we’re with that. I think it’ll bring, you know, new businesses and businesses that will last,” he added.

While details still need to be hashed out, monumental says an initial agreement would add nearly 200,000 square feet space throughout the arena and the gallery place building next door.

What do fans want to see?

“A better fan experience and making sure that the crime rate around here goes down so that more fans can come to the games,” said Arias.

As part of the initial agreement, 17 dedicated officers will be assigned to the area around the arena from two hours before game time to two hours after game time.
