FanDuel to replace DC sports betting app GambetDC

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — National company FanDuel will soon replace GambetDC as the sports wagering vendor in the District.

According to an announcement by the Office of Lottery and Gaming, the agreement allows D.C. residents to gain access to FanDuel’s app which is the “market leader nationally.”

The move comes after years of criticism surrounding GambetDC, the District’s sole sports betting vendor.

Users have long complained that the mobile app is glitchy. It crashed during the 2022 Super Bowl and lost revenue during its first year in operation.

“FanDuel’s industry-leading offering will ensure that the District maximizes revenue under its existing contracts this year while delivering a best-in-class experience for 18+ residents,” said Frank Suarez, executive director of OLG.

FanDuel is projecting it’ll generate up to $119 million in tax revenue for D.C. over the next five years. That’s compared to just $10 million the company project the District’s current system would make. FanDuel is guaranteeing a revenue of $45 million over the next five years.

Those who bet on sports in D.C. said they support the change.

“Gambet has been crashing, there’s issues with it. That’s why I personally don’t use it,” said William Moyler, who bets in D.C. “I’m just glad, I’m glad. It’ll get them a lot more business.”

Jerome Smith said he believes the change will attract more users to the sports betting industry.

“With FanDuel, it’s easy to use. You can maneuver and navigate through the different types of bets you want,” Smith said. “I think the biggest advantage of it is, it’s easy to download, very user friendly. You can give it to someone who is brand new at sports betting and you can explain it quite easy.”

The company currently operates in Maryland and Virginia.

FanDuel will officially launch in the spring and its kiosks will replace GambetDC kiosks on a rolling basis.
