Family of teen killed by US Park Police demanding answers on anniversary of his death

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — It’s been exactly one year since U.S. Park Police shot and killed Dalaneo Martin, 17, in Northeast D.C. after he drove off with an unidentified officer in the backseat of a car.

The officer fired six shots at Dalaneo Martin, before they crashed into a house along 36th St. Dalaneo Martin died at the scene.

“I just want to see justice for my brother,” Dalaneo Martin’s sister, Nishay Martin, said.

She fought back tears she joined her family and others outside the U.S. Department of Justice, (DOJ) demanding the names of the Park Police officers be released.

“We shouldn’t have to wait,” Nishay Martin said. “We didn’t wait to get our brother taken from us or my mother son taken from her. So why should we wait?”

The Metropolitan Police Department asked Park Police to assist after a report came in about a stolen car in the Baker St. area, which is part of the national park system. Park Police then found Dalaneo Martin asleep inside the SUV.

One officer climbed inside the SUV. As Dalaneo Martin woke up, he began to drive away while another officer was being dragged along the other side of the car.

“What’s taking so long on the investigation,” nationally-known civil rights attorney, Ben Crump, said.

Crump has joined the family’s legal team and is calling on the DOJ to release the names of the unidentified officers.

“Somebody who, like my brother from another mother, committed a crime, and we will know everything about them. We would know how many detentions got in school,” Crump said. “But when a police officer shoot us six times in the back, they say, ‘it’s so private, so we got to be so careful.'”

The family still has not revealed why Dalaneo Martin was inside the SUV.

The DOJ, according to the family, will update them on the investigation later this week. However, the DOJ would only say that the case is still under investigation.
