Family seeks justice for sister’s murder in east Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Bakersfield family continues to seek justice after a woman was shot to death in east Bakersfield.

The family of Margarita “Maggie” Lopez was at Tuesday’s Panama-Buena Vista Union School District board meeting to demand Paul Magallanes, a teacher, not be paid during his leave.

Magallanes was booked on suspicion of Lopez’s murder but was released just two days later.

“I’m here to at least, you know, be heard, I will be my sister’s voice from here on out.” Frances Bocanegra, sister of Maggie Lopez said. “We want to see some progress. He shouldn’t be getting paid, and still having a job.”

17 News attempted to contact Magallanes for comment, but we were unable to reach him.
