Family Service of Champaign County collecting to get a ton of food donations in one day

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Family Service of Champaign County is aiming to raise awareness and a ton of food donations. On Friday morning, they sat outside collecting cans and money.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, or RSVP, runs the food for seniors program. It helps people 60 and older with getting food. Friday April 12th they’re going a step further by spending one day gathering one ton of donations.

“The idea is that, you know, you hear the horror stories about people eating their cat food or something like that because their Link or whatever just don’t stretch far enough to feed them,” RSVP Director Terry Goode said.

Goode said they provide all type of things a senior needs to stay healthy.

“They can get protein,” Goode said. “They can get the kind of nutrition that we know support seniors.”

Robbie Edwards has been volunteering with RSVP for more than fifteen years. She said she understands why this is important for those giving and people in need.

She works closely with new volunteers and shows them the ropes. Together they all have one main goal: feeding seniors.

“It’s good for the people that are going to receive it, and it’s good for the people that are giving the food,” Edwards said.

Before we left, the program had accepted more than a hundred dollars and several donations. Food items will be delivered twice a month on the first and fourth Tuesday. Anyone interested in the program can head here.
