Fairview Christian Church hosts “Living History” event for Carthage students

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carthage area kids enjoy a living history lesson.

For the past 22 years, a number of community volunteers have dressed the part of historical figures and made presentations to school children.

It happened, today, inside Fairview Christian Church.

It normally happens outside at Central Park, but a change of venue was in order due to the threat of rain, compounded with the fact the park was damaged in last week’s storms.

Regardless, the kids got to see history as opposed to simply reading about it.

“I hope they take away how special they are. That this day was provided for them, and to just realize that they have so many gifts and we want them to understand that these were just ordinary people who became extraordinary because of the virtues that they shared with others,” said Bonnie Schaeffer, Great Americans Day Cmte. Member.

“And also our great American heroes, every one of them has such stories of difficulty and adversity and hardship in their lives. It’s so inspiring, and you think, ‘oh, every one of us can gain from their stories’,” said Debbie Herbst, Great Americans Day Cmte. Member.

“These 5th-grade students, I love working with them, and just watching the light bulbs go off when they, ‘oh, really? That, that did happen?’ So, it’s just fun. Fun to share,” said Michele Holliday, Portrayed Harriet Beecher Stowe.

More than 400 5th-grade students were part of today’s event that also included games, arts and crafts, and dancing.
