Fairhope airport receives $3 million in federal grant

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — The H.L. Sonny Callahan Airport in Fairhope has received a $3 million federal grant.

Back in 2007, the airport purchased 110 acres of surrounding land, putting it in major debt.

Jack Burrell, with the City of Fairhope, said the grant is a saving grace.

“But with this grant, we are going to be able to build roads and put in water and put in underground utilities and put in sewer and make this land such that we can develop it,” Burrell said.

Burrell told News 5 that the grant gets the airport steps closer to other projects planned.

“We are well underway with our terminal on the east side,” Burrell said. “That’ll be a big boom. We just put out a request for a proposal for another FBO, which we would like to house at the airport, so a lot going on out there, and then we also hope to replace our taxi way lights and then asphalting the runway.”

Burrell also mentioned that the $3 million grant was needed to stay on top of the rapid growth in Fairhope.

“An airport is a key economic indicator for the city, and we know if we have growth, then we know that our city is prospering and the many businesses in Fairhope count on that airport to fly in and out of,” Burrell said. “Private planes fly in and out of there.”
