The claim: Ivanka Trump is joining the Democrats to run against her dad

A video on social media claims former President Donald Trump's eldest daughter has plans to go in her own political direction.

"Ivanka Trump is joining the Dem0crats to run aga!nst her Dad," reads the title of a 10-minute-long video posted to Facebook on Dec. 8.

Commenters on the video, which received more than 500 reactions within a week, expressed mixed reactions to the supposed news, some finding it far-fetched and others taking it at face value

"Do you really believe a word of this," one commenter wrote.

Another wrote, "Worst idea ever, Ivanka!!"

The claim is false. Ivanka Trump is registered as a Republican, according to New York State Board of Elections records. And the video's title is deceptive, as nothing in the video itself addresses the unfounded claim.

USA TODAY reached out to Facebook user who shared the video for comment.

Ivanka Trump is a registered Republican

The former president's oldest daughter hasn't switched parties. As of Dec. 12, Ivanka Trump was registered as a Republican, according to the New York State Board of Elections. The New York Times reported in 2020 that she switched her voter registration from Democrat to Republican in 2018, after missing the deadline to switch in 2016.

“I am a proud Trump Republican,” Ivanka Trump told the Times in 2020.

Though the surprising nature of the video's title draws viewers in, the video itself has nothing to do with Ivanka Trump's supposed departure from her dad's party.

Just over 20 seconds into the video, the narrator asks viewers, "Is Ivanka really going to be Trump's running mate?" The video goes on to read word-for-word part of a Vanity Fair article on Donald Trump's rocky relationship with former Vice President Mike Pence and addresses a number of other unrelated issues.

Reports from Vanity Fair and New York Magazine's Intelligencer have speculated that the former president may choose Ivanka Trump as his 2024 running mate.

But similar claims that the former president wanted a dad-daughter ticket when he ran for president in 2016 were reported in 2020. At the time, the elder Trump called those claims "ridiculous."
