Fact check: Anthony Fauci hasn't served on the board of the Clinton or Gates foundations

The claim: Dr. Fauci has been on the Clinton Foundation, Gates Foundation boards

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been in the public eye since the coronavirus pandemic began, and he has become a popular target of misinformation.

Fauci serves as the U.S. director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He has maintained his stance on the importance of caution while reopening, which has drawn criticism from conservative Americans and politicians, including President Donald Trump.

Despite political tension, Fauci has become one of the most trusted voices during the pandemic.

His affiliations have become a target for misinformation on social media. One Facebook post falsely claims he was on the Clinton Foundation board of directors for 20 years and now serves on the board of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Was Fauci ever a member of the Clinton Foundation board?

The Clinton Foundation is a nonprofit organization, meaning it must file Form 990s each year to maintain its tax-exempt status.

Fauci is not listed as a member of the board of directors on any of the foundation's 990 forms from 1998 to 2018, which is the most recently available document.

Additionally, the foundation has never made an announcement regarding Fauci being on the board and he is not a current member of the Clinton Foundation's board of directors.

Is Fauci serving on the Gates Foundation board?

Fauci is not listed on the current Gates Foundation's Executive Leadership Team. While he has not held positions on the foundation's leadership board, a spokesperson for the foundation confirmed that from 2003-10 Fauci served on the scientific board of Grand Challenges in Global Health.

The organization is a public-private partnership funded by the Gates Foundation, the Foundation of the National Institutes of Health, the Wellcome Trust and the Canadian Institute of Health Research. The initiative worked to identify "critical scientific challenges in global health and increase research on diseases that cause mullions of deaths in the developing world."
