FAA issues nationwide ground stop to Alaska Airlines flights

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration issued a nationwide ground stop for all Alaska Airlines flights early Wednesday morning, April 17.

“All Alaska Mainline and subcarrier flights ground stopped,” the FAA Air Traffic Control System Command Center said in an advisory, noting the stop excludes SkyWest.

In a statement provided to ABC4 Utah, Alaska Airlines said it experienced an “issue” while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates the weight and balance of its flights.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we requested a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights, which was instituted at approximately [8:30 a.m. MT]. The issue was mitigated and the ground stop for Alaska and Horizon flights expired at [9:30 a.m. MT],” Alaska Airlines said.

Affected flights have started to resume their schedules, according to Alaska Airlines, though passengers may expect residual delays throughout the day. The FAA confirmed that operations were returning to normal after Alaska Airlines requested the ground stop.

The airline said passengers are encouraged to check the status of their flights on alaskaair.com or through the Alaska App before heading to the airport.

As of 9:45 a.m., the ground stop does not affect flights coming to or departing from Salt Lake International Airport. According to the airport’s website, Alaska Airlines flights arriving to Salt Lake are “scheduled.”

Meanwhile, the first Alaska Airlines flight does not leave Salt Lake City until 11:11 a.m.
