Extreme heat moving into central Pa. for Labor Day will challenge records

Labor Day weekend is the last hurrah of summer, and it's going to be a scorcher.

A heat wave that could break records in central Pennsylvania will start over the long weekend, said John Banghoff, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The peak of the heat will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures in the mid-to upper 90s. The mercury will reach into the 90s on Sunday and Thursday, too, but it will not be quite as hot.

Extreme heat moves into central Pennsylvania

The extreme heat that other parts of the country has experienced earlier this summer now is moving into central Pennsylvania, Banghoff said.

The upper level pattern is changing, allowing the heat to build. The area could experience the hottest temperatures so far this summer, he said.

Most of the records at the Harrisburg Airport for this time period are in the mid-90s, Banghoff said.

One school district − West Shore − has schedule a remote learning day for students in buildings without air conditioning, according to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Dry weather continues for south-central Pennsylvania

In addition to the heat, it will be dry through Thursday. South-central Pennsylvania is behind in rainfall.

Adams, Lebanon and York counties remain in a drought watch, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

Harrisburg International Airport recorded 2.03 inches of rain in August. Normal precipitation for the month is 3.77 inches.

For the year so far, the Harrisburg area is more than 6 inches below normal. Only 22.97 inches of precipitation has fallen, according to the National Weather Service.
