‘Extreme disappointment’: Inclusive playground vandalized in Castle Rock park

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (KDVR) — An inclusive playground in Castle Rock was vandalized, and investigating police believe two juveniles were involved.

The Castle Rock Police Department said that while this is an ongoing investigation, officers no longer need tips from the community. However, the agency did not have any more details to give.

On a nice Friday afternoon, Brett Turner loves to take his 6-year-old grandson to the inclusive “Possibilities Playground” at Butterfield Crossing Park.

“The work that they put into this park is so special. It took them awhile and a lot of money went into this place to bring in special equipment for sensory type of stuff for autistic children like my grandson,” said Turner.

He was saddened to learn about what happened nearly three weeks ago.

“It’s great stuff for them,” said Turner. “I just hate to see it get ruined or damaged by somebody who feels like they don’t have anything better to do.”

Castle Rock police told FOX31 that on May 4 around 9 p.m., two juveniles caused nearly $2,500 worth of damage to the musical equipment at the park.

“They’re just beat up pretty bad. They don’t sound like they used to. It’s a dull thump,” said Turner.

It’s his first time back at the park since the vandalism happened.

“It was extreme disappointment that that’s happening here in our neighborhood,” Turner said. “I mean it’s happening everywhere, but when it hits home like this you don’t want to think it’s someone from our neighborhood.”

Turner said he hopes the kids responsible for the damage learn their lesson because it can really hurt the kids who play there.

“You don’t want to blame everything on the parents,” said Turner. “Kids make their own decisions no matter what age they are at. Parents can try their hardest and they don’t always make the right decisions.”
