Extra patrols planned Friday from Medford to White City

Dec. 21—Motorists traveling along Crater Lake Highway from Medford city limits through to White City will want to be on their best behavior behind the wheel Friday afternoon.

Medford police, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Oregon State Police Central Point office will be teaming up for a "traffic safety saturation patrol" from noon to 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at the Big X in Medford — where Highways 62, 99 and 238 intersect — and continuing through the two major routes to White City.

The multiagency enhanced patrols will continue along both Highway 62 and the Rogue Valley Expressway to the unincorporated area, according to news releases from OSP and Medford police.

The police agencies will be watching for five behaviors linked to fatal crashes: speeding, impaired driving, distracted driving, improper lane changes and occupant safety violations such as unworn seat belts. Police refer to the five behaviors as the "Fatal 5."

"These categories of traffic violations have been proven to be the primary contributors to serious injury and fatal crashes," the Medford police news advisory states. "We thank you for driving responsibly, and wish you Happy Holidays."

OSP is planning extra patrols through the new year addressing the Fatal 5, with its primary focus being on impaired driving.
