Explosive noises expected this week in NE Ohio

NEWTON FALLS, Ohio (WJW) – Explosive noises commonly heard in Trumbull and Portage counties coming from the Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center are expected to be louder and more frequent this week.

According to a press release from the Ohio National Guard, explosives and hand grenades will be used during training that is scheduled to take place Wednesday, April 10 through Sunday, April 14.

The release warns residents and area business owners they may notice an increase in blast noises, and that some who don’t commonly hear the training exercises might this week.

“Sounds from the explosions may be heard farther away than what occurs during normal operations,” explained the release.

Camp James A. Garfield is an Ohio Army National Guard training site located on about 21,000 acres off State Route 5 near Ravenna and Newton Falls. On the property are small arms weapons ranges and permanent facilities designed for Army and other Department of Defense training.
