Experts advise heightened caution at toll plazas following deadly crash

GHENT, WV (WVNS) — On Monday, March 11, 2024 a car traveling northbound on I-77 hit three cars that were stopped at the Ghent toll booth.

As of Tuesday, March 12, 2024, three people were confirmed to have died in the crash. The damage also resulted in a fire, which caused serious structural damage to the toll booth plaza.

West Virginia State Police Troop 7, as well as a West Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, are investigating the accident. Lori Weaver Hawkins with AAA Bluegrass, told 59News it’s very important to stay cautious when driving in toll areas.

“People respond in much fewer numbers as far as how dangerous it is down and around that 40 percentile that thinks that’s dangerous. That tells you what the mindset is for the people trying to speed. It’s really sad they are risking their lives and others lives just to save a couple of minutes on their trip.”
