Expect a spring slowdown along Mackinac Bridge

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Mackinac Bridge Authority has announced a repaving project that will slow down traffic along the Mighty Mac this spring.

Repaving along the bridge’s north viaduct is scheduled to start on March 25, weather permitting. In addition to repaving, crews will make repairs to the deck and joints along the two northbound lanes.

Traffic will be limited to one lane each way during construction. The northbound work is expected to be done by May 23. The southbound lanes will be tackled next spring.

“As with any construction in northern Michigan, the best weather unfortunately coincides with the highest traffic volumes,” MBA Chief Engineer Cole Cavalieri said in a statement. “We are glad we have been able to schedule this work to occur before traffic peaks for the summer to reduce delays for travelers.”

The project will include wide-load restrictions. Vehicles 10 feet or wider will only be allowed to cross once per day, between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday because traffic must be to allow for those crossings.

The MBA says weekend peak traffic is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., even with all toll lanes open. Drivers are urged to consider crossing the bridge at off-peak times to avoid delays.
